Where I'm At Right Now
It has been a while since I’ve written a blog post. I’ve been busy as all get-out, and it has been difficult to find time to sit down and write out a post. Of course, as I write that I have the phrase “take time to make time” ringing in my head. So this is me taking time to make time. I’ll start with RDNA. RDNA was awesome, and it was an amazing 9 month journey. For...

Giants, WTF??!!
So in my last post I was all worked up because of black outs? Last night it just so happened that I was able to catch the San Francisco Giants game. W00t! Except for the fact that they lost in the 10th. Man, what’s up with that? It’s OK though, at least I got to watch. Posted via email from Wes Temby’s posterous | Comment »

Corporate America Sucks
No, this isn’t some screed about Monsanto, or Phillip Morris, or Wal-Mart … instead, I am going to kivetch about the MLB. Yeah, Major League Baseball. Y’all guys suck. I say this because we’re getting into the baseball season full-on now, and I’ve been experiencing black-outs regularly. Not alcohol-induced black-outs, mind you, but coverage black-outs imposed by MLB...

My fellow Americans … Wow, it felt funny just using that as a blog post entry, I can’t imagine what it would feel like to say it in front of a crowd! Anyway, it’s June now, and I’m due for an update to this here readin’ Internet online web log site. It has been almost a month since RDNA concluded and I was sent back out to the wilds of civilization. In that time, I...

Netflix for Wii = FAIL
I have cut my cord to cable, and I was honestly banking on Wii to be a suitable replacement for my laptop when it came to Netflix streaming. I didn’t want to buy a single-use box, so the Wii seemed a natural fit. Only now, I’m realizing that Wii sucks when it comes to Netflix. This performance leaves A LOT to be desired. Even when my internet service is fast with no interruption...

Happy Birthday to me
This is the image and email that my Hungarian family sent me. What does a white horse rearing up in the desert next to an ice block with a sword and bottles have to do with anything? I dunno, but I love the image nonetheless. Dear Wes,   Happy birthday to You!   Love,   Magdi, Merci & Mesi Posted via email from Wes Temby’s posterous | Comment »

Weeks of Gratifying Work
The past few weeks I have been in a very busy state of mind. RDNA took a spring break from between April 12 - 14, which I managed to fill with an internship at Marin Organic. I had heard about a development opportunity there, and I was lucky enough that they’ve brought me aboard. I don’t have that much experience with grant writing and non-profits in general, so it is great to be...

Jack Of All Trades
Today I learned about the phrase “Jack of all trades, master of none.” Namely, that the phrase has another line. The last line is: “Though oftentimes better than master of one.” I often times think of myself as something of a Jack of All Trades, and as it is commonly used in the United States this is a pejorative description. It implies a broad, but shallow, competency....

What's Real, and What's Not
It has been awhile since I’ve posted, and for that I am remiss. But I’ve been busy. And it’s Monday, and this is a post, so that’s that. Anyway, Mondays are an actual work day for me. When I say actual work day I am referring to the fact that this is a “normal” work day for both me and the rest of the world. I am usually not on the same schedule as the rest of...

About Those Middle East Uprisings
I don’t have cable, so I can’t begin this post with a snappy line about how the cable media is all agog at the uprisings seeming to happen simultaneously across the Middle East. I do have the Internet, though, so in a way I’m closer to the revolution than those watching via the tube (as opposed to the tubes). But suffice to say that anyone with any access to news in the last...

A Dork Am I
So yesterday whilst working across teh Internetz it occurred to me that I don’t have nearly enough action in my life. This thought sprang from a tale that a colleague recently told about watching Spike TV’s MOVIES FOR GUYS WHO LIKE MOVIES one morning and loving it. I thought to myself: hey, “I’m a guy. And hey, I like movies!” But I don’t have cable, so that was...

A Week Off RDNA
This week we are not holding RDNA, so it’s kind of like a President’s Day/MLK Day break for me. For the past two weeks we’ve been really busy at our Northern site location near Bolinas at the Commonweal Farm. Being so near the ocean we had a fair amount of wet weather out there, but it wasn’t too bad. The week before last we had Ane Carla Rovetta as a guest instructor,...

Mushroom Foray
Last week was a little different; instead of going to Bolinas and being with my RDNA classmates I instead traveled north to the Mendocino coast for a mushroom foraging expedition. My companion on the trip was a fellow Gaia University student, Gabe. Gabe lives in the Western Sierras (I always want to type “Sahara” for some reason), and has been a mushroom forager for several years now....

The Face of Humanity and Permaculture
So RDNA will wrap up this week, and I’ll head back to San Rafael via lovely Highway 1. Speaking of Highway 1, we were out at Gazos Creek State Beach this week, which is located along that beautiful stretch of road. We were doing a little nature awareness studying out there, skulking around in the sand dunes. One of the interesting things we do at RDNA is play games in nature. It’s a...

First RDNA of 2k11
In a few hours I’ll leave this comfortable little apartment of mine in lovely San Rafael, and head south to meet up with my RDNA brethren. It’s been about a month since we’ve convened, having taken a break for the holiday season. It was a necessary respite, as RDNA is a really difficult program. There’s the physical hassle of having to go to site (at least an hour, whether...

Rap Stars, and Stock Investment ... WTF?
Man, 2011 is starting to shape up to be a doozy. Not a month in and we’ve had a member of congress take a bullet, Sarah Palin has already laid her victim card down, and now 50 Cent is pimping stocks! I actually watched a movie with 50 Cent in it the other day. I was on a Val Kilmer kick, and started off the day with a movie that has him and Stephen Dorff as felons doing time in San Quentin....

Things Around The House
Made some beer the other day, that was awesome. A steam beer, to take advantage of the cooler temperatures this time of year. A look at the thermometer says that she’s holding tight at 64 degrees, which is what we want to see. In two weeks I’ll rack this into another carboy, and we’ll re-use the yeast cake for another beer. We used all grain, so this saves money and also natural...

Ted talk on how sound effects us

Gifts of Rain ...
So this week while I’ve been at RDNA we’ve had some serious rain and harsh weather. On Tuesday it was pouring buckets the entire way down, and it only let up after 10PM. Yesterday it was not too rainy, but last night there was a very hard frost. I woke up in my car about 3AM pretty cold and this morning I noticed sheer sheets of ice on my windows. The blessings of these weather...

My Wednesday: Tracking!
This week we’ve been blessed in RDNA to be linked up again with the Native Eyes crew. These folks are pretty awesome, and have some serious insight into animals, their behaviours, and their tracks. I’m always jazzed to be around them, and even better: to learn from them! We set out early this morning from the Venture Retreat and headed south to Gazos Creek State Beach. Native Eyes woke...

Waldorf and Montessori
Recently I made a little gaffe while talking to a friend in RDNA. I know that he attended a Waldorf school in Minnesota, but I accidentally said “Montessori” instead. Until that moment, I had never given much thought to the two in contrast. In fact, prior to meeting and speaking with this individual, I had never given much thought to either educational approach on an individual level....

2 Week Roundup
Over the last two weeks I’ve been pretty busy. The holidays are like that. This year my holiday season is not only filled with, well, the holidays, but with my RDNA program and Output Packets for Gaia University, too. I’m trying to make a point of posting each week, so this is me playing a little catch-up. Last week we began with a fun little exercise, wherein we were tasked with...

Look What Wes Made!
I got a little inspired by the holidays, and decided that I’d create my own wreath this year. Forget buying plastic garbage from China, this is made by me, using local materials!I took two wire hangers and unbent them to form a rough circle. I left the hook on one of the hangers, so as to make the hanging easier (duh). After that was done, I just jaunted down to a local park, keeping my...
